On Feb. 7, as part of the 40 Acres Black History Month Programming, The Guild Theatre is presenting "Thurgood." It is a powerful one-man play, starring James Ellison.
The production brings to life the extraordinary journey of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Justice of the United States Supreme Court who stood as a towering champion of justice, equality and the promise of the Constitution for all Americans.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Seats are limited. For tickets and more information log on to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/thurgood-one-night-only-tickets-1980501007828?aff=oddtdtcreator.
"Thurgood" goes beyond historic legal victories to reveal the man behind the robe, his wit, doubts, and unwavering commitment to justice. Through compelling storytelling, audiences will explore themes of courage, perseverance, and the ongoing struggle for equality, offering both historical insight and timely reflection.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Thurgood Marshall grew up witnessing the daily realities of racial segregation—experiences that shaped his lifelong pursuit of civil rights and equal protection under the law.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and went on to graduate first in his class from Howard University School of Law, where he was trained to use the law as a tool for social change.
Marshall believed the Constitution was a living document, meant to grow and expand to protect the rights and dignity of every citizen. Long before his historic appointment to the Supreme Court in 1967, he fought tirelessly as a civil rights attorney. He led the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and most notably argued and won Brown v. Board of Education, which dismantled legal segregation in public schools.
Throughout his career, Marshall stood firmly for fairness, human dignity, and the belief that justice should not be reserved for the privileged, but accessible to all. A principle that many in our country today have seemed to lost sight of.
"Thurgood" is one of many educational and entertainment events on tap for Black History Month at the Guild Theater. It promises to be a memorable evening, so be sure and get your tickets for this dynamic show on Feb. 7.
The Guild Theatre is located at 2828 35th Street in Oak Park/Sacramento, California.
