HIGHWAY TO HIGH STAKES: “CRIME 101” IS A SLEEK, STAR-POWERED THRILL RIDE
Director
Bart Layton's new movie "Crime 101" crackles with an edgy confidence. It's a high-stakes thriller adapted from
Don Winslow's 2021 novella of the same name that feels both classic and refreshingly modern.
Chris Hemsworth trades superhero swagger for icy precision as master jewel thief Mike Davis, orchestrating elaborate heists along Los Angeles' iconic 101 freeway with surgical calculation.
The robberies are so meticulously timed and flawlessly executed that law enforcement is left grasping at shadows and the City of Angels has rarely looked this stylishly dangerous on screen.
When Mike sets his sights on the ultimate score, his carefully controlled world collides with that of insurance broker Sharon Combs (a dynamic Halle Berry, "Never let Go") and sparks fly in many ways.
Watching Hemsworth and Berry share the screen together is a cinematic event. It's almost criminal that they haven't worked together on a film like this before. What took so long? After their magnetic, layered performances here, audiences will absolutely want more.
But there's another force quietly pulling at Mike's guarded heart. Her name is Maya (a terrific Monica Barbaro, "One Night Only"), the woman who just might make him question whether one last job is worth the risk. Barbaro brings warmth and emotional depth, giving the film a romantic undercurrent that ups the ante beyond diamonds and dollar signs.
Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo ("Now You See Me: Now You Don't") delivers grit and a quiet intensity as Detective Lou Lubesnick, a determined but slowly burned-out investigator convinced he’s finally cracked Mike's pattern.
Corey Hawkins (“The Man in My Basement") also shines as his partner Det. Tillman, while Nick Nolte's "Money" character is a gruff, well-connected underworld fence that injects the movie with gravelly menace. Just when the tension feels ready to snap, Barry Keoghan ("Paul McCartney biopic") storms in as a volatile biker hungry to muscle in on the action.
Sharp, stylish, and unapologetically cool, "Crime 101" is adult, intelligent action filmmaking firing on all cylinders. If this is the new blueprint for modern crime thrillers, consider the bar officially raised.
