To categorize saxophonist Kirk Whalum as simply a "smooth jazz" artist would barely scratch the surface of his enormous talents.
The singer/songwriter/saxophonist grew up in Memphis, Tenn., the son of a Baptist preacher. Whalum was surrounded by music, particularly Gospel, at an early age.
