It's impossible to not love Baby Groot. The sensitive, tree-like humanoid is adorable. The Guardians of the Galaxy character voiced by
Vin Diesel, returns, this time in
"I Am Groot," a five-original short series
streaming Aug. 10 on Disney+.
The only complaint you'll have about these hilarious, family-friendly shorts, is that there should be more of them.
Even so, "I Am Groot," from director/screenwriter
Kirsten Lepore ("Everything, Everywhere All at Once" and "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On") is an absolute delight.
The episodes follow Baby Groot and his mischievous ways which always land him in big trouble.
Audiences will discover a lot more about Groot, his triumphs and failures, and his sometimes-rocky relationship with his best friend, Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper, "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3"). When he's caught in various predicaments, Groot's expressions of anger, curiosity and excitement are downright hilarious especially when he meets a group of tiny alien insects. Groot's playful innocence is what makes him so charming and appealing.
While Groot has mainly been a background character within the Marvel World, it's finally nice to see him come out of the shadows and take center stage.
Oh, and listen for
James Gunn, the mastermind behind the "Guardians of the Galaxy films," who makes a voice cameo as Wrist Watch.
This may be the shortest movie review I have ever written, but then again, it's a review on a series of "shorts" that run a total of about 20 minutes tops.
So, there you have it. "I Am Groot" is short and sweet, with a big emphasis on sweet.
You can check out all five episodes of "I Am Groot" Aug. 10 on Disney+.
