After impressive star turns in “Black Panther” (Erik Killmonger) and “Creed,” Michael B. Jordan picks up the action hero mantle in the thrilling, new drama, “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse.”

It’s a perfect vehicle for the charismatic and swaggerlicious actor who also is one of the film’s producers. Although the supporting cast shines too, notably Lauren London (“Always and Forever”), Jodie Turner-Smith (“Queen & Slim”) and Jamie Bell (“Rocketman”), Jordan really carries the film.

Directed by Stefano Sollima, (“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”) and written by Taylor Sheridan (“Hell or High Water”) and Will Staples “Shooter”), “Without Remorse” is based on Clancy’s 1993 novel which was a spin-off of the Jack Ryan series.

In the movie, Jordan plays Senior Chief John Clark, of the U.S. Navy Seals. A mission involving a rescue of a hostage in Aleppo (Syria) is botched when his crew mistakenly attacks the Russian military rather than the Syrians.

Now, the Russians are out for payback and their first target is John Clark. But before the mayhem begins, John and his pregnant wife Pam (London) are enjoying talking about life with their bundle of joy. John decides to head downstairs and listen to some music and let Pam sleep.
John can’t hear a thing because his headphones are on, but the killers have made their way to his house. They waste little time when inside. They think that Pam and John are in bed and shoot up the room. In the process they kill Pam. John narrowly escapes.

John’s biggest mission now is finding out who is responsible for the murders. He suspects that CIA agent Robert Ritter (Bell) and Secretary of Defense (Guy Pearce, TV’s “Alantown”) have withheld information that put him and the entire unit at risk. It’s a good thing he can trust his fellow soldier Karen Greer (Turner-Smith) to find out what really happened.

Once he does, John is hellbent on getting revenge and does so in spectacular fashion. The action sequences in “Without Remorse” are flat out bonkers. Jordan, being the stud that he is, did his own stunt work too.

“Without Remorse” is an exciting revenge thriller and with Michael B. Jordan front and center, this franchise is off to a great start.
