Lord knows there hasn?t been much to laugh about this year, which is why Melissa McCarthy?s ridiculously silly, but fun new PG rated movie ?Superintelligence? is a welcome relief.

McCarthy?s husband, Ben Falcone directed ?Superintelligence? and it?s their fourth film collaboration and arguably their wittiest yet.

In ?Superintelligence? McCarthy plays Carol Peters, a middle aged, average woman. She?s actually a very average woman who is still looking for her true calling in life. She left her corporate job to work at various charity organizations including a pet rescue/adoption agency.

For Carol it?s all about being a good person and doing things for the greater good in life.

But she?s knocked for a loop while applying for a tech job in Seattle when she is strangely targeted by a powerful Artificial Intelligence that?s voiced by James Corden (TV?s ?The Late, Late Show with James Corden?). She?s a huge fan of Corden, so she?s blown away to discover that he?s now controlling her as a means to study humanity and determine whether or not people should be saved or eradicated from the planet.

At first Carol thinks this is some kind of prank, but soon realizes this is serious stuff especially when the president of the United States (Jean Smart, TV?s ?Watchmen?) is involved, and Carol?s life dramatically changes. Suddenly she?s being chauffeured by a self-driving Tesla, gets her own personal wardrobe assistants, a killer penthouse and her own two billion-dollar foundation for philanthropic work.

To really find out what makes Carol tick emotionally, the AI reconnects her with her ex-boyfriend George (the always reliable Bobby Cannavale, TV?s ?Homecoming?) who is a professor and is heading to Ireland on a fellowship.

When Carol tells her best friend Dennis (a funny Brian Tyree Henry, ?If Beale Street Could Talk? and upcoming ?Godzilla vs. Kong?) about what?s happening, he thinks she?s nuts. Then when the AI hacks into his ?unhackable? high tech government security set up, he?s determined to take him down.

Once Carol accepts her new role, she goes all in to save mankind and the future. McCarthy and Corden?s comedic bantering is a big part of the appeal of ?Superintelligence,? although the supporting cast of Henry, Cannavale and Octavia Spencer who turns up as the female voice of ?Superintelligence" liven things up too.

You can catch ?Superintelligence? now on HBO Max.
