Sarah Perry's beloved novel "The Essex Serpent" is being brought to life on AppleTV+ in a six-part miniseries.

The first two episodes of the Victorian era period drama debuts May 13, then one new weekly episode every Friday through June 10.

"The Essex Serpent" features an all-star cast led by Claire Danes (TV's "Homeland") and Tom "Loki" Hiddleston ("The Avengers"). It is a fascinating story filled with betrayal, lust/romance and mysticism.

Recently widowed Cora Seaborne (Danes) is looking for a fresh start. Now that her abusive husband is no longer in her life she decides to move from London to Essex and pursue her passion as a naturalist. She is intrigued by reports that the Essex Serpent, a mythical sea dragon, has been spotted by the locals and Cora is eager to put her skills to use and investigate.

Then again, maybe all the hysterics surrounding this so-called creature lurking in the River Blackwater is just a bunch of hogwash.

During the course of her observations, she is drawn to pastor, Will Ransome (an exceptionally good Hiddleston). Their flirtatious moments don't go unnoticed by many in town. Their "entanglement" certainly complicates her working relationship. Plus, Will's wife Stella (Clemence Posey, TV's "Ten Percent" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1&2") surely must suspect something is up with these two.

Cora is actually rubbing a lot of folks the wrong way. They soon begin to resent her being around for several reasons. They believe she is really the reason for the sudden and tragic occurrences in the area and they want no part of her.

There are other intriguing and juicy storylines in "The Essex Serpent" including one involving Frank Dillane (TV's "The Girlfriend Experience" and "Fear the Walking Dead") as a doctor attempting to perform the first open heart surgery. He is also madly in love with Cora.

Director Clio Barnard ("Dark River"), screenwriters Anna Symon (TV's "Deep Water"), and Hania Elkington (TV's "The Innocents") go all in with the first two episodes of "The Essex Serpent." Trust me. You will be hooked on this outstanding series. It's a whale of tale.

Editor's Note: "The Essex Serpent" debuts May 13 on AppleTV+ and then one new weekly episode every Friday through June 10.
